This is keenly apparent in Gil's and Loukoum's visits to Santa Claus. When Gil's father announces that they are going to see Santa Claus, his son objects on the tiffany on sale grounds they are Jewish. his father responds that Santa is a cultural rather than a religious figure, and takes his son anyway.
Ils avaient tous entendu. (150)Then he said, "Well, I don't know. Well, yes, I guess. Santa Claus is all religions. I guess I am Jewish." all the parents started to take their children out of line. They had all heard. Santa said, "I didn't mean that," but pretty soon there wasn't anybody left (Buten 139).It is possible to read Gil's behavior as tiffany pendants on sale symptomatic of the inability to navigate social situations characteristic of children with autism. More striking, though, is that the anti-Semitism that surfaces briefly in this scene has no resonances in the remainder of the novel, where larger social issues generally take a back seat to Gil's personal drama.

When it was my turn, I tiffany rings for sale said to Santa Claus, "I want a remote-control car." "Ok, my boy." "I also want a Nintendo." and Santa Claus said, "Ok, my child." Then he took me in his arms and there was a flash! It was a man who had just taken a photo. he turned to my father and said, "That will be forty-five Francs, mister." (141).
