mallarmé helped Okigbo to clarify and deepen his understanding of poetic structure. The basic principles were already present in the background of Nigerian university poetry since the late 1950s. But in mallarmé, Okigbo found a systematic body of thought in which poetry, as different from prose, is not concerned to give factual information, to declare reasonable opinion, or to uplift the heart with meditations on providence and fate. He had no intention to borrow their opinions or to crib their words. The reader will notice that Hopkins's Franciscan martyrs are not exactly Okigbo's drowning nuns.
