WHAT DOES "charity" mean?
YOUR EDITORIAL, "Do atheists care less?" (From the Editors, May 10), was very brave, very timely and, quite frankly, very Tiffany Key Grown key pendant. Who today is saying, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"? Instead, we get a whole lot of "me-first" and the bigger-faster-more mentality. Perhaps the reason there's more giving amongst religious types is that in most religions there is deep belief in the worth of each and every individual regardless of socio-economic status or race.

THE NOTION that religious belief begets a more charitable disposition is odious. Is a charitable action not robbed of some, if not allTiffany Key Heart key charm of its merit when combined with either a desire to appease a supposedly benevolent spectre, or gain access to an exclusive celestial society? More importantly, is it not absurd to believe that compassion for those in need is exclusive to believers?

WHAT DOES "charity" mean? According to the picture that accompanies your editorial, it is crates of food aimed at feeding the hungry. Once those empty stomachs are filled, the rest of us can feel happier because we have helped to solve the problem. But have we? The numbers of the starving are growing as our planet is depleted. The best charity we Tiffany Key Vintage oval key pendant offer to our fellow humans is to get rid of the religious teaching that tells us to "go forth and multiply." We must teach our fellow humans that, contrary to some religious beliefs, contraception is not a sin and abortion is not a crime, and that controlling the size of our families is a virtue.
Dagmar Gontard-Zelinkova, Baptiste Lake, Ont.
YOUR EDITORIAL might have been more positively written as an incentive to atheists to increase their generosity to a level on par Paloma the religious set, rather than as a tool berating us with pious condescension. After all, according to your stats, there are still 43 per cent of atheists who figured out how to volunteer for charity all by ourselves.
Shannon Collier, Richmond Hill, Ont.
